Assistant Funeral Director

Primary responsibilities

Provides customer service in all areas of helping client families following the loss of a loved one. Provides exemplary personalized and professional service. Learns how a Funeral Director implements choices made by the families/legal representative regarding the funeral, final disposition of the body and memorialization of the individual. Interacts with the family to fulfill death care needs. Ensures customer needs are addressed.


Daily Operations

  • Complete funeral arrangements with care, precision, and professionalism
  • Provide a premier level of client satisfaction that meet and/or exceed the needs of every client family
  • Engage in and support all sales related activities and programs and personnel
  • Reviews the schedule to ensure that it is up to date
  • Follow up on items not noted (i.e. Death Certificates, insurance verifications, etc.)
  • Oversee the preparation and care of the remains of the deceased
  • Work collaboratively with the embalmer to ensure that proper preparations are made before the first viewing
  • Other duties as assigned


Knowledge and Qualifications

  • A Missouri Funeral Director License is required or actively in school
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • A willingness to participate in community organizations
  • Maintain a safe work environment
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of computers, office equipment, and software including MS Office product


Education and Skills

  • Must have at least two years of college and/or funeral service classes
  • Must have at least 2 years of funeral home/crematory experience
  • Must have a license in good standing with the State of Missouri
  • Ability to handle the pressure of daily deadlines
  • Must possess organization and interpersonal skills
  • Good organizational, communication and customer service skills
  • Detail oriented and extremely conscientious
  • Self-starter


Physical Criteria

The ability to stand, sit, walk, and bend for extended periods of time

The ability to work in a variety of weather conditions 

The ability to wear personal protective gear correctly

The ability to lift more than 50 pounds regularly

The ability to respond quickly to sounds

The ability to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces

The ability to see and respond to dangerous situations
