Funeral Assistant

Primary Responsibilities

The Funeral Assistant is responsible to provide support and assistance to Funeral Directors as the need arises. All duties and responsibilities are performed under the direction of the Funeral Director to whom the Funeral Attendant reports and is accountable.


Daily Operations

  • Provide a premier level of client satisfaction that will satisfy the needs of every client family
  • Assist the funeral director in bringing comfort and support to the family both before and after the service 
  • Perform variety of tasks in preparation for the funeral service
  • Other duties as assigned.


Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Greet families and all service attendees
  • Ensure that the register book and tissues are available
  • Aid mourners as they enter or exit limousines
  • Transfer the deceased to funeral homes
  • Clean and drive funeral vehicles (i.e. lead cars, limousines, hearses) in funeral processions
  • Carry flowers to hearses or limousines for transporting to places of interment
  • Ensure that chapels are clean before and after services
  • Transfer floral arrangements from funeral home to the cemetery
  • Light clerical work 
  • Responsible for Visitation and Chapel set-up
  • Receiving and setting up casketed Remains
  • Delivering family items, keepsakes, and flowers
  • Administrative functions as needed
  • Errands as needed
  • Always wear proper attire, as assigned per funeral


Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Must display care and concern for the families and service attendees
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Weekend and evening availability
  • Maintain a safe work environment.


Education and Skills

  • A High School Diploma/or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of computers, office equipment, and software including MS Office products 
  • Valid driver’s license 
  • Good organizational, communication and customer service skills
  • Detail oriented and extremely conscientious


Physical Criteria

The ability to stand, sit, walk, and bend for extended periods of time

The ability to work in a variety of weather conditions

The ability to wear personal protective gear correctly

The ability to lift more than 50 pounds regularly

The ability to respond quickly to sounds

The ability to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces

The ability to see and respond to dangerous situations
