Listen to Obituary

Alberta Pat-Pat Broughton was born on September 16, 1943 in Jenkinsville, South Carolina to John Wesley Martin, Sr. and Mamie C.L. O’Neal. Both of her parents, her sisters: Helen Cargile, Roberta Pete, Olivia Martin, Juanita Brown and Aurtis Martin; her brothers: John Wesley Martin, Jr., Howard Martin, Curtis Martin, Lonnie Martin, Lionel Martin, Harry Martin and Charles Martin; one nephew, Duwayne Martin and one great-nephew, Mark Ashley, all preceded her in death.

She began her education at St. Barnabas Episcopal Catholic School and graduated from McCrorey Liston High School in South Carolina. She later moved to Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 18 years old along with two of her sisters Janie and Helen, and her brother-in-law, Silas Eubanks, Jr.

She married Layfette Broughton and from that union two children were born, Sandra Broughton and Reginald Broughton. She met Lee Sanders and from that union, two children were born, Katina Broughton and Aaron Broughton.

In 1968, Alberta began working as a preschool teacher with Early Childhood Education Center. She loved it so much; it inspired her to start her own daycare in the home. With the assistance of her older sister Helen, she was able to gain employment from the Pembroke Hill School District as a Cafeteria Attendant for 20+ years, until she retired.

She was known for her quick comebacks, witty jokes and the best fried chicken this side of the Missouri River. Whenever family and friends came to the city to visit, they all ran to Pat-Pat’s house.

Pat-Pat departed this life on July 10, 2023, surrounded by her family. She leaves to cherish her precious memories, her four children: Sandra Broughton of Belton, Reginald Broughton (Myisha) of Kansas City, Katina Broughton of Belton and Aaron Broughton (RaShonda) of Kansas City; two sisters: Janie Budgett of Kansas City and Barbara Cook (Donald) of Newberry, South Carolina; two brother-in-laws: Silas Eubanks, Jr. of Belton and Charles Brown of Baltimore, Maryland; her only living aunt, Ernestine O’Neal of Jenkinsville, South Carolina; seven grandchildren: Brandon Woods, Tiara Broughton, Taryn Blankenship, Tyler McKinney, Audrianna Sanders, Aaron Sanders and Aiven Broughton; six great-grandchildren: Caiden Wood, Elliana Wood, Julian Wood, Journie Thomas, Khi’Mir Sanders and the youngest on the way, Aaris Sanders due Sept 23rd; and a host of other relatives and friends. Pat-Pat will greatly be missed by all those who loved her!!
