Sister Alene Smith, born on December 19, 1931, in Kansas City, Kansas, was the beloved daughter of Henry and Bernice Jackson. She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Jerome and LeDrue, and her son, DeWayne Smith, Sr.
Sister Smith attended Northeast Junior High School and Sumner High School in Kansas City, where she laid the foundation for a life of dedication and service. In 1951, she married Brother Lemon Smith, who also preceded her in death. Together, they were proud parents of two children, Kathi Scott and DeWayne Smith, Sr.
Sister Smith devoted many years to KU Medical Center, working in various departments before retiring in 1992 as Assistant Director of the Business Office. After retiring, she enjoyed spending quality time with her family, camping, and deeply engaging in the life of her church. She was a former member of Harvest Church but later found a new spiritual home at Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church. There, under the leadership of Pastor Ricky D. Turner, she served faithfully and with love until health challenges prevented her from continuing. Sister Smith cherished her Oak Ridge family and held them close to her heart.
Sister Alene Smith was called home to be with the Lord on January 5, 2025. She leaves to treasure her memory her daughter, Kathi Scott (Raymond); three grandchildren, DeWayne Smith, Jr. (Veronica), Brianna Cobb (Ethan), and Demetrie Smith (Terra); four great-grandchildren, DeWayne Smith, III “Tre,” Xena Smith, Tyson Smith, and Cameron Cobb; the Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church family; and a host of loving relatives and friends.
Her legacy of faith, love, and service will continue to inspire all who knew her.
