Listen to Obituary

Alice Jean Porter was born January 9, 1953 to the union of Dorothy Skillman and Tricy Simmons in Kansas City, MO. She was the 4th born of 8 children. She was educated in the Kansas City Missouri School District.

In 1971, Alice was joined in marriage to her childhood friend Kelvin Porter of Kansas City, MO. To this union were born three children: Chanelle, Alan “Bebo”, and Monica. Alice began working for Labconco in 1976 and retired from the company after 30+ years of dedicated service.

While working at Labconco, Alice met James Lewis in 1988. They lived and loved together for 34 years until his passing in 2022.

Alice was known for her generous spirit and family gatherings. Holidays and special occasions were not complete without a visit to Alice’s, or “TT”’s house, where the ribs would be smoking, the sweet potatoes would be cooking, and the children would be laughing and playing well into the night. It has been said that every child of Mama Dorothy received a portion of her personality and given Mama Dorothy’s “let’s come together” spirit, it is clear that Ms. Alice Jean Porter was given the gift of being the “hostess with the most-est”. Her door was open to everyone, and her love was evident to all that crossed her path.

On February 19, 2024, Ms. Alice Jean Porter passed away peacefully in her home. She will be sorely missed.

Alice was preceded in death by one daughter, Monica Porter; a sister, Saundra Jo Byers; a brother, Bernard Simmons; her life partner, James Lewis; and her parents, Dorothy Skillman and Tricy Simmons.

She leaves to mourn her passing Son, Alan “Bebo” Porter; Daughter, Chanelle Simmons; Sisters, Carrie Williams, Delores Skillman, and Jeannine Simmons-Gibbs (Fred); Brothers Tricy “Butch” Simmons (Ruth) and Willie Banks; as well as 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
