Listen to Obituary

Bernice Parker Harris was born in Lawrence, Mississippi on September 5, 1938 to Eddie Lee and Carrie Alice Parker. She was number five of ten children.

She is preceded in death by her mother, father, siblings: Dorothy Parker, Herbert D. Parker, and daughter, Theresa Ann Davis.

Growing up in Mississippi, her favorite pastime was playing hopscotch, hide-and-go-seek, and tag. Polly was her favorite pony that she loved riding to her grandmother’s home.

In 1946 the family relocated to Kansas City, Kansas. She attended Sumner High School, after which she married John C. Harris. To this union two daughters were born, Theresa Ann and Carol Jean. She was blessed with another daughter years later, Jacquelyn Rene.

Bernice was a hard worker. She was employed by Unitog in the 1960’s until she moved on to Bendix Corporation in the 1970’s. From there she found a home with General Motors Leeds Plant where she worked until early retirement due to the plant closing in May 1991. Bernice wanted to remain active and joined the Nutritional Services staff at T.A. Edison Elementary School where she ultimately retired after 17 years of service. While working at T.A. Edison, she truly enjoyed assisting the students with reading and homework in her free time.

A born-again Christian, Bernice served on the Bethel Baptist Church Usher Board for many years. Her favorite quote: “God can do anything.” Later she became a member at Cross Point Church in Lenexa, Kansas and attended faithfully until her health declined. She was strong in her faith and believed in the power of prayer.

She was a faithful and loving mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother. She loved unconditionally and sacrificed much to raise three daughters. She was a provider, protector and encourager. She was one of great strength and integrity.
