Listen to Obituary

Betty Jean Clemons (nee Scott), 71, passed away on August 18, 2021 at North Kansas City Hospital in Kansas City, MO.  She was born on July 4, 1950 in Greenville, Mississippi to Moses Johnson and Ruthie Finks (nee Scott).  The oldest of nine siblings, she served as a surrogate mother for her sisters and brothers and many other lives she touched. She married in Mississippi in 1967 and relocated to Kansas City, MO in 1974 with her husband and two children. She was widowed shortly after moving to Kansas City, but remarried and had 2 additional children.

She always believed in the power of education, and she impressed that upon her children.  After working in several nursing homes, she returned to school as an adult to further her education and graduated from Penn Valley Community College in 1992 with her nursing degree. Upon graduation, she was immediately employed at the Kansas City Veterans Affairs Hospital where she enjoyed a long and successful career as a Registered Nurse.   Upon her retirement in 2011, she turned her energies to the church community she loved and her grandchildren who, considering her more than just grandma, called her their “substitute mommy”.  She was a dedicated mother and grandmother who loved her family and worked tirelessly to love and support them in all of their endeavors.  She always encouraged her children and grandchildren to learn, grow, and to be independent, successful people of their own accord.  She believed in the power of the church, and she was a member of the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Kansas City. She is survived by two siblings James Finks of Scottsdale, Arizona and Carolyn Mixon of Englewood, CA; her children Pleaze Robinson, Cynthia Robinson, Tara Parker Graves, and LaKeshia Parker Small; her grandchildren James Eatman III, Derrick Williamson, Cortney Robinson, Jaiden Robinson, Donovan Graves, Kendal Graves, Sela Small, and Liviya Small; and her 5 great grandchildren in addition to a host of other friends and relatives. Her legacy will live on through the family she left behind, and the mark she left on the many lives she touched.

A funeral service will be held at Serenity Funeral Home on August 30, 2021.  Visitation will be at the funeral home from 2:30-4:00PM.  The service will begin at 4:00PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ.
