Carrie Oleathea Carter, affectionately known and called by her middle name “Oleathea” by her family, friends and extended family was born in Blackwater, MO on August 9, 1940 to Hattie Parrish and Horace Poindexter. Oleathea was an only child. Preceding her in death were her parents, grandparents and other relatives.
Oleathea attended school in the Kansas City, Missouri school district. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School in 1958 where she was actively involved and enjoyed many activities during her attendance there. After graduation – Oleathea immediately began working in Corporate America.
Oleathea worked at Western Electric, Kansas City Missouri School District and Kansas City Missouri Water Department. She also worked for the Social Security Administration and the Department of Children & Family Services. After 33 years of Federal Government services, she retired in 2012.
Oleathea was a long-time member of Greater Corinthian Church of the Christ (Non-Denominational) under the Foundership of Emeritus Raymond A. Davis, Jr. which is now under Pastor Eric (Jerome) Roberson. She was involved in various ministries throughout her tenure, but her favorite ministry was singing in the adult choir in the alto section for many years. If there was a service to be attended, you best believe you’d see Oleathea dressed to the hilt and present. Most of the outfits she and/or her children/grandchildren wore, she made. She had a lot of clientele; especially those church going folks from all over the city that would come to her just to look sharp. She was an AWESOME seamstress and was known as one of Kansas City’s best.
Oleathea LOVED to travel and traveled to several places both domestic and international. She especially loved to travel with her “Traveling Buddy” Grandson Carlos. She and her Grandson would go to the East coast all of the time, especially New York which was one of her favorite places to go. She also enjoyed traveling with her daughter, son and grand-daughter too.
Oleathea was a member of the Sycamore Groves Senior Citizens Club where they would attend many plays at the New Dinner Theatre. They would have many potluck dinners where she would share many of her special recipes and dishes. Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays will be missed by not only her family but also by so many others. Oleathea’s cooking was absolutely delicious and was a feast every holiday and whenever she cooked. This was evident by the number of people who would stop by invited or not. Oleathea enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Memories of Carrie “Oleathea” will be cherished by:
