Charles Edward Willoughby, affectionately known as "Charlie", was born to be a star on December 23, 1961 in Kansas City, Missouri to the lovely Evelyn Willoughby Sammuel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hearthon Sammuel (stepfather) and Evelyn Willoughby Sammuel. As well as his siblings: Willa Skyes (sister), Ernest Willoughby, and Larry Willoughby (brothers).
Charles accepted Christ early in life and was a member of Park Ave Baptist Church from childhood through adulthood. He played guitar as part of the church's worship and shared his gifts with many congregations.
Charles graduated from Lincoln High School in 1980. Following his high school diploma, he completed some college courses at Penn Valley Community College.
From an early age, his passion for music was undeniable. Alongside his brothers, he helped form Force Band in 1977, marking the beginning of a lifelong journey filled with rhythm, soul, and unforgettable performances taking Kansas City by storm. Charlie later joined the Sweet & Sticky Band and even made it to stages with the legendary Gap Band during the 1980's. A gifted, self-taught guitarist and keyboard player, his sound was as unique as it was powerful. In the year 2000, he joined Frankie Beverly & Maze, where he shared his artistry for 25 years. Bringing joy, energy, and timeless music to audiences around the world. His music was not just what he played, but who he was: a melody that will continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew him.
Charles was known for being outgoing and full of life, a natural comedian whose fun and funny spirit could light up any room. A world traveler, he carried his music and laughter across the globe, leaving behind memories as vibrant as his melodies. Though on stage he was a force—a true “quiet demon” with unmatched talent—off stage he was the gentle giant, a cuddly teddy bear with a soft-spoken voice that drew people close. A unique soul and a self-taught musician, he lived life boldly and authentically, always ready to share his gift. When the lights came on, he took it to the stage, giving every note, every laugh, and every moment his whole heart.
Left to cherish Charles memory: his children: Shanay Irvin of Kansas City, MO, Kimberly Clay of Moreno Valley, CA, Rochelle Ogburn (Timothy) of Charlotte, NC, and Nicole Duke of Iowa; grandchildren: Tahje Ward and Jaqsyn Crim of Moreno Valley, CA, Alexandria, Caiden, and Malachi Ogburn of Charlotte, NC. Charles is also survived by his brother, Joseph Willoughby, and a plentiful host of family & friends.
