Listen to Obituary

Charlesetta Lockett Johnson was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on July 22, 1962, to Betty Jo Johnson and Charles E. Hill II.

At the tender age of fourteen, she began helping to raise her siblings, becoming the mother figure they needed and earning the nickname “Sister Mother”. She was also affectionately known as Texas Red, Chuck, and Big Red. In 1979, Charlesetta welcomed her first child, Charles A. Hill. After graduating from Van Horn High School in 1980, she gave birth to her daughter, Anika (Hill) Washington, in 1983. She later took on the loving responsibility of raising her niece, Aisha Hopkins, as her own. Charlesetta attended House of Heavilin Beauty School, where she earned her beautician’s license. She eventually began a long career at Cleveland Healthcare alongside her mother, Betty Jo, working as a laundry attendant. She faithfully served for 30 years before retiring in 2015. Beyond her professional work, Charlesetta was devoted to giving back to her community in many meaningful ways.

Charlesetta was a proud and active grandmother to Kyrin, Angel, and King. She was deeply involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s school activities, sports, recitals, and various leisure programs. A dedicated Kansas City Chiefs fan, she rarely missed a game. In 2008, she began dating Nathanial Johnson Jr., and together they shared many cherished years. They married in 2024, sadly preceding his passing shortly afterward. Charlesetta was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Jo Johnson; her sisters, Denise Harris, her father, Charles E. Hill II; Nathanial Johnson Jr.; Charles Hill (“June Bug”) ;(Stella Hill), Deborah Simmons; and Tyrone Morris. She leaves to honor her memory: her children, Charles A. Hill (Kiria Cummings) and Anika Washington (Timothy Washington); her bonus daughter and niece, Aisha Hopkins; and her sisters: Damita Taylor, Nicole Hill Green (Wellington Green), and Erika Hill, her brothers: Dennis Lewis, Kevin Hill, Eric Hill, and Landon Canady. She is also survived by her grandchildren—Kyrin Hill, Angel Washington, and King Washington—along with a host of other relatives and dear friends.
