Ms. Cleora Cozart was a caring Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, Elder, and Friend. She transitioned from this earthy realm on Monday September 13, 2021 at age 81.
She was born in Muskogee, OK. on January 6, 1940 to the union of Chester Leo (CL) and Alberta Cozart. At an early age she moved to Kansas City, MO. where she remained for the rest of her life.
Cleora or Cleo, as affectionately known, was a very caring and compassionate Community Mother. She was a small woman in stature with a gigantic heart, and a humble woman of simple pleasures. Cleora never knew a stranger, opening the doors of her home to her family, friends, and to her children’s associates whenever they needed a place to stay.
Cleora was a devoted Elder and Mother of her church for more than 55 years. She was a Charter Member of both St. Mark’s Union Congregation and United Inner-City Services (UICS). She was a member of First Presbyterian Church before several local assemblies merged.
Mother Cozart remained actively involved in the work of her church, the Historic St. Mark’s Church. Ms. Cozart retired as Cook and Classroom Grandmother at St. Mark’s Day Care. She also faithfully prepared and served communion, sang in the choir and served as the treasurer, and the cough drop supplier. She was a faithful member and attender of the 24/7 Prayer Warriors Ministry, several Bible Study groups, Sunday School, Church Council, Altar Ministry, Mates & Dates, or anywhere else she was needed. Mother Cozart, as she was called for more than 25 years by listeners of KPRT 1590, was a faithful listener and contributor of the “Scripture Shower”.
She was preceded in death by her biological parents, Chester Leo (CL) and Alberta Cozart; as well as Elsie Cozart, who affectionately raised her as her bonus mother. She was also preceded by one sister Coretha Francis Moore, and three brothers Albert, Elmer, and Rickey Cozart, Sr.
As a single mother, Cleora raised and leaves four outstanding children: U.S. Army Major (Retired) Karlus (Melanie) Cozart, Sr., Apostle Leroy Cozart, Carinita (Craig) Cozart-Donnell, and Michael (Faith) Cozart; two brothers: William Cozart, and Leon (Betty) Cozart; and eight sisters: Elzata Nelson, Casandra Cozart, Deborah (Thomas) Horne, Constance Ingram, Jennine (Eddie) Wyatt, Mona (Ronnie) Dean, Vickie Cozart-Smith, and Bernice Cozart, as well as 11 Grandchildren and 17 Great-Grandchildren. Cleora Cozart was also an Auntie, Cousin, God-Mother, Dear Friend, and Faithful Christian.
