David Eugene Thompson, 71, of Lee’s Summit, MO went home to be with the Lord on January 26, 2022. He was born on June 30, 1950 in Topeka, Kansas. He was the 3rd child of four to the late Albert Thompson and Elsie (Bolden) Thompson. At the age of 8, David was baptized at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas. He had such an inquisitive mind, a love of seeking knowledge and a competitive nature. As such, he was curious to see if a body would spin inside a dryer. This led him to crawl inside the family dryer, where his oldest sister assisted in turning it on. He was unable to brace himself and to his terror found out a body could actually spin. He also had a love of baseball, particularly when he played it with his brother Micheal, who played center field and David, right field. If ever a fly ball was hit and Michael dropped it, David would leave from his position and run over to his brother where they would have an intense “meeting of the minds”.
David attended Lafayette Elementary School, junior high school at East Topeka, and graduated from Topeka High School May 28, 1968. He continued his education at Washburn University, in Topeka, KS where he balanced working and striving for excellence. While at Washburn University, he joined the noble clan of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity (Rho chapter). On May 14th, 1972, David obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Washburn University. He continued his post graduate pursuit at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City, KS where he obtained his Doctor of Medicine on July 31, 1976. On June 15, 1974, David united in holy matrimony with Patricia Louise Carr, and to this union 3 children were born, Kimberly Michelle, David Eugene, Darrell Irwin, and they raised a loving family and were blessed to share 47 years of marriage. David began practicing Anesthesia with Westport Anesthesia Group at Independence Regional Hospital, formally known as Independence Sanitarium Hospital in Independence, MO. He had a robust career, touching many lives over several generations of families within the community. David was passionate about his love of medicine and helping others. He had an enriching career of 35 years in the field of medicine and concluded his tenure with Anesthesia Services of Eastern Jackson County at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, MO and St. Mary’s Medical Center in Blue Springs, MO.
David faithfully served at Second Baptist Church of Independence, Missouri since he and his wife became members in 1980. He served as a Deacon for 40 years. While serving at Second Baptist, he loved teaching the Word and sharing knowledge about Christ with others. He was a Sunday School teacher for the youth and taught the adult class. In addition, he used his talent to sing in the Men’s Choir along with being a counselor for the Jr. Laymen Ministry. David’s love for the Lord was immense and passionate, where he spent time with the Lord and consumed the Word and he lived it. He enjoyed the beautiful sounds of Smooth Jazz as well as other music genres. David had several passions and interests throughout his life, most of all he enjoyed the love of his life (“his Patty”) where they shared their life with their 3 children, 2 grandchildren and their family and friends.
