JL Thomas entered this world on March 1, 1931, in Creston, Louisiana, to loving parents Wade and Josephine Thomas. He was the youngest among 10 children. JL’s journey was shaped by the cherished memories and legacies of his parents, 4 brothers, 5 sisters, and wife Essie Lee who all preceded him in death.
At an early age, JL’s faith was anchored as he was baptized in a pond near St. Matthew Baptist church, a testament to his spiritual foundation. JL referred to by many as “Fuzzy” was raised in Shreveport, Louisiana and relocated to Kansas City in 1951. Upon relocating to Kansas City, he joined Progressive Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member and Deacon for nearly 50 years. He later united with Southside 1St Baptist church, where he served as Deacon, and a member of the Male Chorus.
On November 29, 1955, JL embarked on a lifelong journey with Essie Lee Morris in marriage, bringing forth 4 children into this world – James (Kennerd), Leonard (Buck), Theresa (Resse), and Daryl. His dedication extended to his professional life in the construction industry and was a member of Local Unions 264 & 663 retiring in 2004. Upon retirement from construction, he was employed by Walmart until 2012.
JL enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking, listening to gospel music and watching his all-time favorite cowboy shows. He was best known for a clean Ford truck, nice suits and let’s not forget about how much he liked to TALK!
JL was a devoted husband, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, loving Uncle and friend to many. As he takes his place among the angels, JL is survived by his children; James, Leonard (Chevaun), Theresa (Michael) and Daryl Sr., alongside 11 grandchildren 22 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great -grandchildren, and a multitude of other relatives and friends.
