Derrick R. Thompson D-man,57, passed away on December 28, 2020 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kcmo. He was born on April 17, 1963 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Willard Thompson and Allie Mae Ray. He grew up in Muskogee, OK and Kansas City. Derrick attended Southeast High School, and he graduated from Van Horn High School in Independence MO in 1982. After high school he attended House of Heavilin Beauty College, becoming a barber/beautician for most of his adult life. Derrick was a cook at Crown Center and had many jobs in between, Derrick also worked at Research Hospital where he met and married his wife Bridget of almost 20 years. Derrick also worked and retired from Hickman Mills School District, he had a Lawn Service and was a DJ. D-man was a jack of all trades, D-man did not know a stranger, always friendly and helpful with everyone. Derrick was a mentor to young people he met and developed relationships with from the school district. He was an avid Skate Master and went skating several times a week back in the day. D-man had a love for 2 stepping where he competed and won competitions, instructed classes to show others the art of 2 stepping or just some tips to step up their 2-step game/skills. Derrick’s love for 2 stepping led him and other fellow steppers to form the KC Elite 2 Steppers which he was a faithful member of until he became ill. Derrick will be missed in the 2-stepping society. D-man loved red and black from clothes to cars and he loved the KC Chiefs.
Derrick was preceded into death by his mother Allie Mae Ray, grandmother Lillie Mae Hamlet, uncle Wilbur Jr., aunt June Ray, aunt Thelma Ray Davis, aunt Myrtle, brother Julius Moore and Brother Devoy Hill III.
Derrick leaves to cherish his memory; his wife, Bridget Thompson, father Willard Thompson, one daughter; Derriesha Woods(Kevin) Kcmo, 3 sons; Derrick R. Thompson Jr, kcmo, Derrick Williams(Katrina), and Rubin Mitchell kcmo, brother, Leland "Tony" Thompson, sisters; Sherry Lee(Nathaniel)Grandview, MO, Marva Combs, Lucretia House,kcmo. 8 grandchildren; Serenidi Williams, D’mya Woods, Lauryn Williams, Kamya Woods, Kendell Woods, Laiyah Thompson, Nia Williams, Amara Thompson, a host of other relatives, friends, aunts, uncles, nephews, and nieces.
