Donna Marie Ashley Nelms, 83, a lifelong resident of Kansas City, peacefully completed her earthly journey on January 26, 2025. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and dedicated service to her family, church, and community.
She was born on September 2, 1941, in Kansas City, Missouri. Donna was the beloved daughter of Jesse and Morris Ashley Sr. She was raised in a close-knit family with her older sister Nadine, older brother Morris Jr., and younger brother Calvin, all of whom proceeded her in death.
A gifted scholar, Donna excelled in her studies. She graduated with honors from Central High School in 1959. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Missouri in 1963. She later completed her master’s degree in education. Her passion for learning and commitment to education shaped both her professional and personal life.
On February 2, 1964, Donna married the love of her life, Rev. Ommie L. Nelms. Together, they shared 47 beautiful years of marriage and were blessed with two children, Adrienne Lea and Whiley Todd.
Donna was a woman of deep faith and an active member of the United Methodist Church. She joyfully served in various ministries, including the women’s group, church choirs, anniversary committees, and Easter celebrations. Her gift for planning and organization made her an invaluable member of every group she joined.
Beyond her church involvement, Donna was committed to community service. She dedicated countless hours to organizations such as Jack and Jill of America, The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Kansas City, and The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. She was also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and The Links, Inc., where she formed lifelong friendships and made a lasting impact.
Above all, Donna’s greatest joy was her family, especially her cherished grandsons, whom she lovingly called her “Little Boys.” In her eyes, she could see no wrong, and in her presence, they always felt unconditional love.
Donna leaves behind a legacy of faithfulness, service, and love. She is survived by her daughter, Adrienne Lea Shabazz of Overland Park, Kansas; her beloved grandsons, Brandon Willis and London Shabazz; great grandson Ommie L. Willis; a beloved sister-in-law Jacqueline Ashley; cherished niece, Bianca Hines; her godchildren, Stephen Vincent Brown and Logan Williams; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
She is now reunited in eternal peace with her husband, Rev. Ommie L. Nelms, her son, Whiley Todd, and her parents and siblings.
