Dorthy Jean Simmons was born on September 3, 1954, in Hollandale, Mississippi, to Eddie Isaac, Sr. and Beauty Belle Simmons. She was a loving mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Dorthy departed this life on September 23, 2024, at Research Medical Center, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion. She is preceded in death by her parents and four siblings: two brothers, Eddie Isaac, Jr. and John Mark, and two sisters, Eddie Mae and Gladys Celeste.
Dorthy accepted Christ at an early age and carried her faith throughout her life. She received her education in the Kansas City, Missouri School District, graduating from Westport High School before pursuing her nursing degree at Trinity Hospital School of Nursing, where she earned her LPN. Dorthy dedicated many years to the healthcare field as a compassionate nurse, a profession she loved, before retiring in 2017.
Dorthy had a deep passion for cooking and enjoyed reading, often finishing a book in a single day. She loved crossword puzzles and had a deep appreciation for music, particularly her favorite old-school tunes. She cherished spending time with her family, especially her beloved grandchildren. Known for her candid nature, she was never shy about expressing her thoughts.
Dorthy is survived by her daughter, Marguerite Simmons; two sons, Bryant Simmons and Rodney Simmons; six brothers, Curtis, Eugene, David, James, Victor, and Charles Simmons; two sisters, LaVertis Richmond and Maxine Simmons; and her special friend, Billy Greening, all from Kansas City, Missouri. Dorthy also leaves behind 20 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever hold her memory in their hearts.
