Dovie Lee Simmons was born on July 17, 1930, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Will Simmons and Lillie Williams. Dovie made her peaceful transition from this life on Friday, May 16, 2025, in the comfort of her home.
Dovie received her education through the Little Rock, Arkansas School District. At the age of 20, she moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she found employment at the Detroit Osteopathic Hospital in Highland Park, Michigan. She dedicated many years of loyal service there until her retirement in 1994.
Dovie’s favorite pastimes were bowling, playing cards, and going to the casino. She had a vibrant, joyful spirit and brought laughter and warmth wherever she went. Whether she was striking pins at the bowling alley or sitting at the card table with friends, she did it all with a radiant smile. She never complained, no matter the circumstances, and her cheerful demeanor uplifted everyone around her.
She was the mother of one child, Gloria Jean Mitchell. In 1994, Dovie relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, to be closer to her daughter and family. From the moment she arrived, she became a steady and loving presence in our lives. Whether offering a helping hand or sharing quiet moments together, Dovie’s support and care meant the world to us. Her move brought our family even closer, and the years that followed were filled with meaningful time together and lasting memories.
Dovie was preceded in death by her mother, Lillie Williams; father, Will Simmons; sister, Easter Story; and brother, Will Simmons Jr.
