Emma Jean Yarber, 96, passed away on October 28, 2024, at home in Independence, MO. She was born on August 12, 1928, to parents George Washington Whitaker and Era Butler in Dallas County, Arkansas where she grew up and attended school. Emma Jean was proceeded in death by her parents, daughters: Bobbie Jean Yarber (Sameenah), Doris Reese, and Vickie Yarber; granddaughters: Arynn Urban and Krishawn Marshall; grandson: Donald Ray Arnett; siblings: Mary Delamar, Robert Whitaker, Milton Whitaker, George Whitaker, Marvin Whitaker, and Bessie Bowman.
She began work for Lee Jean Factory in the 1960’s as a seamstress where she worked for 25 years. She retired from the United States Uniform Company after 10 years at the age of 65. Emma Jean was a proud member of the Eastern Stars.
Emma Jean never met a stranger and was loved by many. Her warm and welcoming nature made everyone feel like family. She touched countless lives with her kindness and generosity, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Emma Jean was affectionately known as the “Pie Lady”. She was an avid baker whose delicious pies brought joy to many. Her passion for baking was matched by her talent as a seamstress. For twelve years, she lovingly crafted drill team uniforms for The Marching 23rd St. Cobras, led by Willie Arthur Smith while traveling around the world.
Emma Jean was a devoted member of Ward Chapel AME Church for over 60 years, where she served as a stewardess. Emma Jean was a pillar of her community, known for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith.
She married William Yarber in 1945, and to this union four children were born. In 1960, she met the love of her life, Woodrow McCowan, and together they welcomed a daughter.
A lifetime of love and memories will be forever remembered by her daughter: Yvonne Yarber-Collins, and son Jerry Yarber (Ella). Brother: Charles Whitaker; Granddaughters: Debra Kay Arnett-Trimble (Martin), Octavia Reese, Nicole Urban (Andrew), Sadiyyah Muhammad, Jameelah Johnston, and Nadiyyah Muhammad. Grandsons: Harrell Yarber (Cynthia) and Jerry Yarber, Jr. She also leaves a strong legacy of fourteen great grandchildren, thirteen great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
