Listen to Obituary

Flora Lee Ross, 93, of Kansas City, MO, passed away in the home on May 31, 2023. She was born Flora Lee Dotson on September 1, 1929, to Ruth (Carter) Dotson and Isaac Dotson in Edwards Mississippi. She was one of 5 children and the only girl. At the age of 5, Flora and her mothers moved to Wichita, KS. Upon their arrival, they were received and resided with Rev. Willie and Minnie Coleman and their daughter Ann. She lovingly called them Mom, Dad and aunt “Honey”.

Flora attended Wichita Public Schools and graduated from Douglas High school in 1948. Shortly after graduation Flora and her son Curtis Dotson moved to Kansas City, MO.

In time, she met the love of her life Otto Ross Jr. They were inseparable and were married on December 24, 1955. The next year their union was blessed with a another son Otto Ross III. Staying faithful to God and with their deep and abiding love for each other, their family grew abundantly to include grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Flora accepted Christ at an early age. She was a member at St. Paul Baptist MBC and Greater Mt. Zion MBC. Lastly, she was a dedicated member at This Rock Christian Tabernacle where she was a Deaconess and a Mother. She was over the Mother Board and was a Sunday School teacher. She started two ministries; the Women’s Chorus and Helping Hands which provided food for people in need. It was her true calling to serve, as the Lord led her.

Flora was a dedicated homemaker. She also worked outside her home when the opportunity arose. She was a travel agent for the Marmet Travel Agency.  She and Otto owned and operated a janitorial service, a lawn service and a thrift shop all located in Kansas City, MO.

Flora lived life to the fullest. She was a den mother for the Boy Scouts. At one time, her hobby was making hats. She liked meeting strangers, talking to them, and making them laugh. In other words, she never met a stranger. She loved traveling, eating and fishing with her husband and great granddaughters. She loved, loved talking on the phone! She was very family oriented, nothing was more important to her than family!! She was a wonderful, caring, and compassionate woman and very feisty!!

Flora was preceded in death by her parents, her guardian parents in Wichita, her aunt, Ann “Honey” Riley and her brothers; Willie T. Dotson, Lueete Dotson,  Eddie Lee Dotson and Alonzo Carter Jr.

Flora leaves to cherish her memory: her loving husband of 67 years, Otto Ross Jr; sons, Curtis Dotson and Otto (Pat) Ross III, both of Kansas City, MO; granddaughters, Nikita (Eric) Chappell, North Kansas City, MO; Erica Dotson, Teresa Dotson, both of Kansas City, MO, Christine Jones, St Louis, MO; grandsons, Curtis Dotson Jr., Aaron (Bertha) Ross, both of Kansas City, MO, Brian Ross, Mansfield, TX; 19 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren, all of Kansas City, MO; sister-in-law, Friedle Ross, Kansas City, MO; a beloved niece, Patrice (Michael)Rushing, Kansas City, MO; a beloved nephew, Willie C. (Mattie) Lynn, Wichita, KS; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and church family (many who lovingly called her Mom.)
