Listen to Obituary

Flora Elizabeth Spann, 73, passed away on October 9, 2017 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born June 4, 1944 in Mound Bayou, Mississippi to Lester E. Chase and Rosie Lee Chase. She grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, and graduated from Central High School. She began her career in the hotel industry for two years.

Flora was a sweet loving mother to her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family, and friends. She had a heart like no other. She was always giving and helping others. She had the strength of a woman and mother that was unmeasurable.

She attended Morris & Sons Beauty Salon for four years and received her degree in Cosmetology, as a beautician. After the hair industry, she became employed at Butlers Manufacturing Company for 10 years. She became a registered Muslim in the Nation of Islam in 1962, where she accepted the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. Later in 1990, she accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. She loved God with all her heart, mind, and soul. She believed in the power of prayer and was an anointed praying woman. In 1994, she began working for Enhanced Home Care as a Caregiver for 12 years. After gaining so much knowledge from the caregiving business, and the love that she had caring for people, she began her own business in caregiving for 7 years.

Our mother was a pioneer for the Lord. She had a spirit that lit up any heart she came in touch with. Mother knew that prayer worked. Her whole life was built on prayer, the love of the Lord, and her children. She most definitely would feed you and open her door when in need, and send you off with some words of encouragement. She was full of joy and laughter. Most of all, her heart desire was that her children and grandchildren were saved and live for the Lord. She was the matriarch of this family and the glue that bonded and kept us together. She paved the way through prayer, for she knew that the prayers of the righteous availeth much. She has created a legacy that will live forever. One thing for sure, she always had and made time to pray and encourage those in need. To many she was a spiritual mother.

She was preceded into death by her parents, Lester E. Chase and Rosie Lee Chase; daughter, Aliya R. Spann; grandchild, Darrell Shelby; son in law, Anthony Jenkins.

She is survived by her former husband; Isaiah Spann Sr., (Marilou), 7 children, Sheila Spann-Williams, Fatima Spann-Jenkins, Isaiah Spann Jr. (Georgette), Tonya Spann=Talifero (Ivory), Trayce J. Spann (James R. Rodgers) Marcus Spann, Nasia M. Spann; brother Raymond Starness; special cousins, Betty Jean Coleman of Crestview, Florida, Annette Wilder and Gayle Brewer of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a host of other relatives and friends.
