Garry Eugene Gaines, 64, passed away on January 16, 2021 at home. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Festus and Dorothy Gaines, his eldest daughter, Deshawn Sasser and his eldest brother, Norman Gaines.

He was born on January 26, 1956 in Kansas City, Missouri to Festus and Dorothy Gaines. He graduated from Central High School in Kansas City, Missouri in 1974. In 1980, he began his career of 40 years with the City of Kansas City, where he worked until the time of his passing. At a young age, Garry professed his faith in Jesus Christ and accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was a member of the Deliverance Temple Church of God in Christ.

Garry married the beautiful, Janet Gaines on May 27, 2000. Janet was the love of his life and they spent many years together, making lasting memories. They were happily married for 20 years. Garry sent a text to his daughters on May 27, 2020 saying, “20 years of marriage to my wonderful wife today. No wonder why my hair is gray LOL”.

His passions were traveling, doing yard work, talking with the neighbors, making sure his dog (Cookie) was well groomed and rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs. Garry will be remembered for his kindness, hard-work, patience and love for helping others.

Garry was a hard worker and he was proud of his career achievements. While working for the City of Kansas City he received numerous awards for Employee of the Month and also for Employee of the Year. He was most recently awarded in 2019.  He texted his children, “Your boy did it again. Employee of the Year”. The kid’s response was, “You must be the only employee that works there”.

Garry was a great Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Uncle and Friend. Garry loved life and his grandchildren were his pride and joy. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for his babies.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Gaines, two sisters; Deborah Gaines, Kansas City, Mo. and June Holland (Prines), St. Louis, Mo., five children; Brian Sasser Sr. (Nicole), Randall Jones, Cherakie “Missy” Barrett, Wilford “BJ” Barrett III and Jaleisha Fleming (Clifton), nine grandchildren; Brian Eugene Sasser Jr., Jalayah Deshawn Fleming, Mekai Sasser, Messiah Sasser, Cai Fleming, Armani Barrett, Malaya Barrett, Tysyn Berry, Jrayah Fleming and his 1st great-grandson; Boston Rai Sasser. He also leaves two Special Nieces, Kelli Holland and Dr. Karla Holland, who never missed his birthday nor Father’s Day, a bonus son; Big Will Thomas, a special brother-in-law; Anthony “Tony” Russaw, nieces; Dani Holland, Charde’ Gahagans, Mackenzie Morgan, and a host of other relatives.
