Life in the Key of G
Geneva J. Scott was born on November 10, 1948, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Henry and Irene Johnson. In 1982, she relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, with her beloved husband, Dwight Scott, and their children. There, they built a life rooted in love, ministry, faith, and education while raising their five sons and serving the greater Kansas City community.
Geneva lived a life marked by service. She faithfully poured into others through her work in various church ministries and through her career as an educator in the Kansas City Public School District. She was also one of nine founding charter members of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated at Philander Smith college in Little Rock Arkansas, leaving a lasting impact through both her professional and civic involvement.
Among her many accomplishments were the roles she cherished most: devoted wife, loving mother, “Grandma G” to 18 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, choir director, Sunday school teacher, youth ministry leader, mentor, and encourager and not to mention talented seamstress. Yet even these titles capture only a portion of the lives she touched.
Geneva Scott played every note of her life in faithful service to Christ — nurturing her family, supporting her husband’s pastoral calling, and ministering with compassion to all who crossed her path. A woman of remarkable gifts and resourcefulness, she believed in giving her very best in every season of life. If she did not have what was needed, she created it. If she could not create it, she found someone who could. She embodied perseverance, creativity, and quiet strength.
She modeled what it means to run your race and give it everything you have. Geneva understood the beauty of playing one’s role with excellence, knowing that no role is insignificant in the greater composition of life.
As a gifted musician, she lived her life much like a masterfully written score — full of depth, harmony, and purpose — playing the sheet music of life in a way that only she could. And though her earthly melody has come to rest, the resonance of her love, faith, and influence will continue to echo through the generations.
Visitation Note:
Honoring Geneva’s wishes, a viewing will take place during Thursday’s visitation. Friday’s memorial service will be a time of remembrance and celebration as we reflect on the gift of her life.
Memorial Note:
In Lieu of Flowers
Geneva was a woman of both compassion and practicality. Many years ago, she expressed a heartfelt desire that, when her earthly journey was complete, acts of love and remembrance would be directed toward helping others rather than through the sending of flowers.
In honor of her wishes, donations may be made to support an orphanage in Nigeria, West Africa, operated by Pastor Timothy Ojo — a ministry she faithfully knew, loved, and supported for many years. It is a meaningful way to continue her legacy of generosity and care for those in need.
Donations may be mailed to:
Bannister Road Baptist Church 7503 East Bannister Road Kansas City, Missouri 64134
Please note that the donation is designated for the Nigerian Orphanage.
Service will be held at a future date
