Georgia A. Powell

August 17, 1931 — June 11, 2022

Listen to Obituary

Georgia Ann Powell, 90, was born on August 17, 1931, to Tom Walter Lenoir and Mary Elizabeth (Walker) Brownlee-Lenoir in West Point, Mississippi.  She was the 10th out of 11 children.  Both parents and all siblings preceded her in death.

At an early age Georgia confessed her faith in Christ and joined Lake Grove Baptist Church.  She attended Lake Grove Elementary School and West Point High School in West Point, Mississippi. Years later, she met and married Bennie Cid Powell on February 28, 1948.  The couple celebrated 60 years of their marriage on February 20, 2008.  From this union 2 children were born, Bernice and Wallace.

In 1950, seeking better opportunities, the family moved to Kansas City, Kansas where they joined Tabernacle Baptist Church.  Georgia sang in the choir.  She was employed by Service Industrial Cleaners, along with eleven other family members.  As a dedicated employee her work experience transferred to the home: washing and ironing, folding clothes and maintaining an orderly house.

After moving to Kansas City, Missouri in 1951, they joined Skylight Baptist Church where she continued to sing in the choir.  Many years later, they joined Palestine Missionary Baptist Church of  Jesus Christ.  She continued to sing in the choir, served as a Sunday school teacher for many years; and was a member of the Mission Circle and the Mother Board.

Georgia will always be remembered as someone who LOVED her family.  It was known to all that she loved them.  Georgia was the matriarch of the family, and was affectionately called “Mother Dear” or “Aunt Georgia” by her loved ones. Dear to their hearts are Teresa Powell and Ryan Long. Out of love she and Bennie embraced many family members who relocated to Kansas City.

She fought a good fight.  She finished her course and on Saturday,  June 11, 2022. Her homegoing was peaceful, and she is at rest.  To cherish her with fond memories she leaves her two children, Bernice Cottrell (John) and Wallace Powell (Connie);  three grandchildren: Weslee (Fawntae), Evan (Rachelle), and Michael; fifteen great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews,  relatives and friends.
