Gerald Wayne Hicks

Gerald “Jerry” Wayne Hicks, 63, departed this life on April 13, 2023, at University Truman Medical Center West. He was born June 15, 1959, in Colorado Springs, CO to Henry Lee Hicks Sr. and Viola Harris Hicks.

Jerry attended school in the Kansas City school district and later went into the Job Corps to continue his education. He later joined the Army in 1975-1979. Jerry was working for Saint Luke’s Hospital until he was involved in a car accident in 1991 causing a traumatic brain injury. He was disabled from then until his death. Jerry not only had small cell lung cancer in 2016, but he also beat the odds of surviving it! He never complained about his situation or the pain that he was in. He was our very own Superman!

He was preceded in death by both maternal and paternal grandparents, his beloved mother, Viola Harris Hicks, nephew, LeAmos Dickerson and a half-brother, Terry Jackson.

Jerry is survived by his father, Henry L Hicks Sr. (Juanita); older brother, Henry L Hicks Jr; two sisters, Tonja Hicks-Jones, DeAnna Bland (Eric); nephews, DaWawn Orr, Cortez Hicks, John Orr, Christopher Hicks-Berry; nieces, Lafaye Townsend (Rodney), Jessica Orr-McCloud; sister-in-law, Marilyn Jackson; special “daughter” Whitney James (Jeremy); very special friends, Lisa Horn, and Jerry Wilkerson, and a host of other family and friends.
