Georgia (“George”, “Georgie”) Leigh Washington (nee Wright), 74, passed away January 30, 2026 in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born June 23, 1951, in Helena Arkansas to the union of George Wright and Ruby Wright.

Georgia lived in both Helena and Kansas City, Kansas, graduating from Wyandotte High School in 1969. Her outgoing, fashionable, and no-nonsense personality led her to a variety of roles over the course of her life and career, including owning and running her own catering and flower arrangement businesses.

Her love of reading and focus on education was legendary. Before she was waylaid by cancer, she was a few semesters short of attaining her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Northwestern Missouri State University. Much to the delight and horror of local libraries who had to put a limit on how many books she could check out at one time, she enjoyed many genres but was most drawn to mysteries and dramas.

As a single mom, she raised both of her daughters to lean into their natural talents, be fearless and to own their lives, regardless of where it took them. Her oldest daughter is an international CEO, trailblazer and leader in many spaces, public and private. Her youngest daughter was born with a natural artistic talent and individualism that has continued to lead her down many new paths. Although it was not always obvious, Georgia had a deep well of empathy, love of family, and compassion that made her everyone’s mom. Her soul-deep belief that family should take care of family was non-negotiable. Over the years, she opened her home and heart to many family members who needed a couch or money, a “parent”, someone to care, or just a pragmatic voice to help figure out the hard crossroads in life. One of her greatest joys and sorrows was her nephew whom she took in as a baby and helped give much needed stability for as many years as she could. She also thoroughly enjoyed letting her only grandchild, “Booba”, learn what it was like to get away with absolutely everything. Her boys were her second set of children that she loved dearly.

Georgia is survived by her two adult children, Kimberly DeWitt (Christopher DeWitt) and Shaunta Washington, two brothers, Paul Wright, residing in Surprise, AZ and William Wright, residing in Bonner Springs, KS, grandson Kingston “Booba” Bell, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and extended family. She would also want to offer a special thanks to her nephew, Keith Dixon, who has gone to great lengths to support the extended family.
