Listen to Obituary

Hazel C. Gillmore was born June 19, 1941, in Kansas City, Missouri.  Her parents Charles and Beatrice McClain preceded her in death.  She was educated in the Kansas City, Missouri school district.  She was the mother of three children, Eric and Deidre McClain and Phillip Gillmore.  She later married William Gillmore in Kansas City, Missouri.

Hazel was a life-long member of Cain Grant AME Church, but also attended St. James United Methodist Church, and Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas where she volunteered with the youth ministries and other ministries.

She was employed by Menorah Medical Center in her early years and later worked for Cain Grant AME Church as a day care provider and eventually opened her own day care providing extraordinary care to many children including those with special needs.  Hazel, upon closing her daycare after many years, became a nanny for prominent families.

Hazel was an avid reader and for several years was a book reviewer for a major publishing company.  She loved shopping and was always looking for a sale and managed to dress in a very stylish manner matching from head to toe (including purse and accessories).

During her lifetime, she had many medical challenges to which she managed to always rise above, stay active, moved forward and rarely or never complained.

Preceding her in death were her brothers, Clarence McClain, Samuel McClain, and Richard McClain; one sister, Diane McClain-Freeman; and her son, Phillip Gillmore.

Hazel is survived by her children, Eric McClain and Diedre McClain; one sister, Evalyn McDonald; sister-in-law, Carlos McClain; brother-in-law, Rev. Warren Freeman; a special granddaughter, Diamond McClain; grandson, MyRon McClain and a host of other grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
