Listen to Obituary

James Edward Winfield transitioned from his earthly life into heavenly eternal life on August 9, 2025, at home.

James (Jim) was born on October 26, 1943, to John (Bo) Winfield Sr. and Katie Mae Winfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Janika Winfield; and sisters: Katye Nelson and Girther Winfield.

Jim joined Second Baptist Church under the pastorate of Dr. Kendall D. Jones Sr. He was a faithful, committed member and loyal, devoted deacon for over 20 years until his passing. Jim loved the Lord and was immensely proud to be a deacon. He also served as a Bible study teacher, prayer service devotion leader, transportation ministry driver, a member of the Adult Sunday School, and Wednesday Bible Study classes. Jim enjoyed visiting church members, family, and those hospitalized. He had a humble spirit, a kind heart, and was always willing to help his church family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, and the community in any way.

Jim was a family man. He dearly loved and adored his children, especially his grandkids. Jim was adamant about teaching them about the Lord and doing what was right. He would often bring them to worship service, vacation Bible school, and Sunday school.

Jim would help support them in any way possible by often keeping them on weekends throughout the summer or whenever needed. They were his pride and joy.

Jim was proud of his independence. He was tenacious and loved working hard. Jim worked for Braniff Airlines and later became a certified bus inspector for the Independence School District until his retirement. He also proudly served the Democratic Party and was honored for his many volunteer hours.

Jim loved working on cars before and after receiving his mechanic and CDL licenses. He was passionate about fixing things and had his own side business as a mechanic.

Jim had a green thumb and could grow just about anything. He loved working in his gardens and often had two okra patches. Jim was a fantastic cook and possessed a God-given skill for preparing delicious foods. He would prepare enough food for several days, if not all week, and still have plenty to take to his brother.

Jim leaves to cherish his memory four daughters: Jamie (Anthony) Allen, Faith (John) Howard, JoAnn (Sam) Jones, and Jamesette Winfield; four brothers: John Winfield Jr., Jack Winfield, J.L. Winfield, and Adam (Rose) Winfield; 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, a host of cousins, aunts, nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, and the Second Baptist Church family.
