Listen to Obituary

John Henry Blankenbaker III, known to those closest to him as “Butch,” passed away on March 8, 2025, in his hometown of Kansas City, MO. Born on September 11, 1972, John lived a life full of bold energy, sharp wit, and an undeniable presence that could shift the mood in any room.

A graduate of Paseo High School, John had an affinity for the arts and talent for drawing that not enough people knew about. He was better known for his impeccable sense of style, infectious laughter, and the love he had for his family and friends. John rarely missed a Miller family get-together or night out with the cousins. He made it known to everyone that he could cut a rug with the best of them when a dance floor, or just music, was involved. The spirit and energy he brought to this world will live on in our hearts along with the countless stories he leaves behind.

John was preceded in death by his sister, Valerie Patrice “Lil’ Val” McCoy, brothers Ronnie Mayweather and Rodney Mayweather; father, John H. Blankenbaker Jr.; paternal grandparents, John H. Blankenbaker Sr., and Earline Blankenbaker; and maternal grandparents, William B. Miller and Katherine Miller.

John is survived by his loving mother, Valerie McCoy; his siblings: Jermaine Blankenbaker, Jimarse Blankenbaker, Earnest McCoy, Ryan Blankenbaker, Jaleesa Blankenbaker, Brian McCoy, and Felicia McCoy-Clark; his beloved nieces and nephews; and a wide circle of friends and extended family who meant the world to him. Though his laugh has left this earth too soon, his memory remains eternal.
