John Hammett

Mr. John Hammett went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at his home in Kansas City, Missouri, surrounded by his oldest and youngest daughters.

John was born September 17, 1929 to Pernolury Hammett, in Dumas, Arkansas. Mr. Hammett attended grade school there until 6th grade. He was baptized unto the Lord as an infant in St John’s Baptist Church in Winchester, Arkansas. John Hammett left Dumas at the age of 17 to pursue a job in the factories of Little Rock, Arkansas; returning home often to visit with his grandfather, Zeke Hammett.  He later began to travel as a bodyguard for an up-and-coming boxer, going to Texas, and later becoming a father to a Daughter Debra and a Son Joseph.  His travels continued throughout Texas, California, Chicago and ultimately to Kansas City, Missouri, where he met the love of his life, Edna Ruth Hardin who had one child Ruth (Pookie) and was pregnant with another (William Anthony) whom he adopted both.

Their union then produced two daughters, La’Nita Kaye and Brenda Faye. John Hammett was an accomplished entrepreneur, the owner of John’s Janitorial Service, holding contracts with several businesses for many years throughout Kansas City Metropolitan and surrounding areas.  John later worked for Charlie Fisher Buick where he retired at the age of 70.

John is preceded in death by his wife: Edna Ruth Hammett; mother: Pernolury Hammett; grandfather: Zeke Hammett; sister: Ozell Jimerson; stepbrother: Johnnie Mile; and grandson: Cedric Osborn Jr.

He is survived by his sons ; Joseph Cornell Wilson of Seattle, WA and William Hammett (Tonya) of Olathe, KS; his daughters, Debra Hammett of Little Rock, AR, Ruth Neumann (Winifred) of Kansas City, MO, La'Nita Hammett-Bell (Don) of Kansas City, MO, Brenda Williams-Gray (Reginald-Kindhearted Son-In-Law) of Kansas City, MO; sisters: Margie McNary of Palmdale, CA; Priscilla Hines, Tahita Shalom (Molly) of Los Angeles, CA, Love McGhee of Dumas, AR, and Dorothy Thomas (Doll) of San Bernardino, CA; his Grandchildren: Julian, Briana, Janese (Williams), LaNia Thomas, Harrington and LaDonn (Bell), Alisa Osborn, Courtney Hammett, Andrea, Kenneth, Brittany (Moore), Remeco, Rhoulanda, Joseph Jr. (Wilson), Brenda Teres, TJ, Tausha, Edna, Adriane, Tiffany, John David, Carleena and Tracy(Hammett) ,and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, and all of our loving In-laws (Hardin-Welchen, Burch, and Green) families.
