John Wallace Smith, age 67, was born on October 5, 1958, in Booneville, Mississippi, and transitioned on December 21, 2025, in Kansas City, Missouri.
John was born to Martha Lucinda Rogers and Clifton Loving. While John was still young, his mother Martha married James Clifton Smith, who adopted John and raised him as his own child, proudly serving as his father throughout his life.
Following his early childhood, John relocated with his family to Buffalo, New York, where he spent the majority of his formative years. While in Buffalo, John was an active member of Mount Ararat Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend W. L. Jones, and proudly served as a member of the Youth Usher Board. John remained in Buffalo through his late teens and early adulthood before later relocating to Kansas City, Missouri, where he lived with his Uncle Herman and Aunt Sue during a pivotal time in his life. Surrounded by their love and support, he established his home in Kansas City, where he remained until his passing.
John dedicated over 20 years of service to the Kansas City Water Department.
Outspoken, larger than life, and full of personality, John had a presence that commanded attention. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone, leaving people smiling long after the moment passed. He was resourceful, always had a hustle, and proudly marched to the beat of his own drum.
John took pride in handling his own business and was known for his love of cars, horses, barbecue, and a good game of spades. With a natural flair for cars, wardrobe, and theatrics, he lived life unapologetically and on his own terms. One of his favorite sayings, “I’m taking care of business,” was more than just a phrase — it was a way of life.
John was preceded in death by his birth father, Clifton Loving; his mother, Martha Lucinda Smith; father, James Clifton Smith; and his sister, Melinda Smith.
He is survived by his children, Rashad Richardson (Alicia) and Eric Gahagans; his grandchildren, Keilani Richardson, RJ Richardson, and Jalen Richardson; and his brother, James Smith (Jackie), of Buffalo, New York.
He also leaves behind Michelle, his former spouse and lifelong companion, and her children, Kisha, Michael and Joseph, whom he took under his wing and cherished as family. He is also survived by his niece, Verrinda Jones, and his nephew, Kellen Gray, both of Buffalo, New York, as well as a host of aunts and cousins.
John Wallace Smith will be remembered for his unmistakable presence, his larger-than-life personality, and the lasting impression he left on everyone he encountered.
