Listen to Obituary

Joseph Tanner Jr. was born in New Orleans, La. on January 7, 1947 to the union of Joseph Tanner Sr. and Ethel N. Tanner.  Joseph left this earthly life on May 13, 2020. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Tanner Sr., his sister, Barbara J. Merrick, and his brother, Anthony E. Tanner Sr.

The Tanner Family moved to Kansas City, MO where Joe, as he was called, lived most of his life. Joe graduated from Central H.S. He chose the career path of a machinist and worked in that field for many years.

Joe was a long term member of John Wall Jr. Lodge #5 since the early 70s.

He knew Jesus as his Lord and Savior, and was a member of Centennial United Methodist Church, and later joined Grant Chapel A.M.E. Church. He was an advent reader of God’s Holy Word and had a deep passion for reading and journaling.

Joe had a special love for his family and friends, enjoying shooting pool, laughing, joking, listening to music, and hanging out on the Tanner’s front porch. He was also a self-taught barber, cutting the hair of many.

Joe will be deeply missed by his mother, Ethel N. Tanner, his sons, Rodney S. Tanner Sr., Joel Duane Tanner and Joseph Tanner III (Carmen), one step-daughter, Felicia Sumler (Robert) 2 brothers, Arthur J. Tanner (Beverly) and Henry W. Tanner (Suzanne), one sister, Cynthia M.
