Listen to Obituary

Lamont Barbee was born February 20, 1950, in Durham, North Carolina to Wilhemena and Clyde Barbee. Lamont was called from this earthly life by the Lord on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, when he gained his wings to fly away to his heavenly home.

Lamont attended Merrick-Moore High School in NC where he graduated in 1968. He attended college at North Carolina Central University. Lamont moved to Kansas City, Kansas in 1973 to attend Mid-Continent School of Aviation where he graduated in 1975 as an Air Frame Power Plan Mechanic. In 1977 Lamont enlisted in the US Army and worked as a Morse Intercept Operator for 3 years leaving as a Specialist 4 rank. He then joined the Kansas National Guard for 14 years with rank of Captain spending 2 years overseas stationed in Germany until he was honorably discharged.

Lamont worked for Owens Corning Fiberglass company for 35 years as a Line Coordinator until his retirement in 2012. He then went on to work part time for FedEx until 2023. Lamont also worked as a Bus Driver for the Olathe School District for 10 years. He really loved his job as he loved to drive anything that had wheels. The children, teachers, principal and parents loved Mr. Barbee. They looked forward to seeing his humble spirit and welcoming smiles as he greeted each student every morning and at afterschool pickup, until he became sick and no longer able to work. Lamont loved spending time with his family. He also loved travelling, working on and driving cars, grilling, and being an all-around handy man and jokester at heart. He always had a good joke to tell.

He accepted Christ at an early age with his work and walk with the Lord. When Lamont moved to Kansas he attended and became a member of Edwardsville Temple Church, under the leadership of Bishop Emeritus Cunningham. Lamont then became a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Otis L. Cobbins, Sr., until his death. Lamont was appointed deacon under the leadership and guidance of Pastor O.L. Cobbins, Sr. Although Lamont’s work schedule prevented him from regularly attending Sunday and Wednesday service, he attended as much as he could until his retirement, then he was able to attend services regularly. After the death of Pastor O.L. Cobbins, Sr., Lamont moved his membership to Bread of Life East Church under the leadership of his son Bishop Otis L. Cobbins, Jr. He served as an Usher, and Deacon. He held and served these posts with love and gratitude. He always had a smile, hug, or firm handshake for you welcoming you anytime he saw you. Lamont was later appointed and served the position of Chairman of the deacon board, and as a Pastoral Committee member where he was committed in doing the work of the Lord. Lamont was a true servant of the Lord.

In 1995, Lamont met Brenda and married after 2 years of dating his true love. No children were born from this union, but a blended family was brought together as one. Lamont’s love was pure and unconditional to his wife, all his children, grandchildren, and anyone else he came in

contact with. He never met a stranger, because he always had a nice kind word and made you feel welcome.

Lamont is now resting in the arms of the Lord, no more pain. I could imagine his response would be if one would ask him how he’s feeling, in his favorite quote: “Fine as silk, good as gold, right as rain. If I felt any better, I’d have to be two people because one person couldn’t feel this good!”
