Laura Dean Solomon, 80, passed away October 27, 2020 surrounded by her family. Laura was born on February 10, 1940 in Simsboro, Louisiana to the late George “Fat” Jones and the late Jessie Mae Street Jones. Her family called her Dean and she was the eldest of six siblings, three preceding her in death: Elexa Jones, Sammie Jones, and Callie Mathews. Laura graduated from Grambling High School in 1959. After high school she attended Grambling College. Later she moved to Kansas City, Missouri where she attended Penn Valley Community College and the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC).
In 1970, Laura began working for the Kansas City, Missouri School District with the Follow Through Program as a Parent Coordinator. She later served in the capacity as Secretary for many schools within the district, retiring after 32 years of service. She also worked for Hallmark Cards, and part-time as a sales associate for Macy’s, Dillard’s, and the Jones Department stores, and as an Information Clerk for the Blue Ridge Mall until its closure.
In 1980, Laura was united in holy matrimony to her long-time beau, Winston Solomon who proceeded her in death after 35 years of marriage. The two enjoyed spending time cooking, gardening, and traveling with family. Summer evenings were spent sitting on the front porch of their home with family and friends, sharing laughs and having in depth conversations about life.
Laura was a member of Swope Parkway Church of Christ. She later joined Grace Assembly of God, under the leadership of Pastor Sydney Ramphal. Laura served in the Sunday School ministry as Sunday School teacher to the youth, she was an active member of Golden Seniors, and hostess for Sunday morning breakfasts.
