Lawrence Boyd Jr., affectionately known as "Punny", was born on February 12, 1957, in Wyandotte, Kansas, to Lawrence Boyd Sr. and Luticia Boyd. Lawrence graduated from Central High School in Kansas City as a proud member of the Class of 1975. He later pursued his passion for cosmetology, earning his license from Joyce Williams School of Cosmetology in 1994. Lawrence built a remarkable career spanning several decades. He dedicated 17 years to Procter & Gamble (Folgers Coffee Company), followed by five years at Aventis Pharmaceuticals (formerly Hoechst Marion Roussel). His professional journey culminated with 13 years of service at the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA), from which he retired.
Lawrence was a dedicated father who enjoyed family vacations, cooking, and fishing in his spare time. A man of unwavering faith, Lawrence was a lifelong member of St. Matthew A.M.E. Zion Church in Kansas City, where he found strength and community. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Luticia and Lawrence Boyd Sr., and his brothers Samuel Newman (Claudia), Archie Boyd (Nona), and Alonzo Boyd, and his sister-in-love Elizabeth Lark.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved sons, Lawrence Boyd III ("Larry") and Leland Boyd; his former wife of 38 years, Carolyn Boyd; his brothers: Torrance Henderson, Ervin Wayne Boyd, Ernest Boyd, and Ronald Boyd; his stepbrother: Duane Murff (Donna), Larry Murff, Mark Woods, and stepsister Mae Frances Calhoun; his sisters: Teresa McIntosh (Gerald), Thelma "Pinky" Hill (Robert), Pearleen Rowan (Charles), Roxian Baker (Micheal (d)), Tammy Peoples (Darrin), and Rhonda Briscoe (Terry); his special nephew: Melvin Knight (Carolyn) and Godson Telvin; and his two special friends: Sylvia Garrette and Angela Nelson.
He will also be dearly missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends who were blessed to know him. Known for his warm personality, infectious laugh, and “50 things,” "Punny" left a legacy of love, hard work, and devotion to those he cared for. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
