MRS. LEONA SMITH Leona (Lunn) Glass Smith was born to the union of John W. Lunn, Sr. and Nannie (Daniels) Lunn on September 15, 1917. She departed this life on December 26, 2015 at home. Both parents and ten of her siblings preceded her in death. Most of her life was spent in Rosedale, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. She attended schools within District 500 in Kansas City, Kansas --Attucks Elementary, Northeast Junior High, and was a graduate from Sumner High School Class of 1936. She was the first African-American to be employed at the Kansas City, Kansas Court House as a secretary. She also was a certified cosmetologist graduating from Madam C.J. Walker School of Beauty Culture. She was employed as a supervisor in the glassware department in the Virus Research Department at KU Medical Center for over twenty years. At an early age, she united with the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor A.B. Fuller. She served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years and was a member of the Naomi Mission Circle, sang in the adult choir, and was a teacher of the junior class. She was also a faithful member of Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Ben C. McIntosh, Sr. and Evangelist Joan Lunn-Warner. In May of 1947, she was united in marriage to John E. Glass. To this union, one daughter, Meri Elizabeth, was born. John preceded her in death. She later was united in marriage to Locy R. Smith who also preceded her in death. Leona is survived by her daughter, Meri Collins, one sister, Katharine Cooper, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, great nieces, nephews, and great nephews. Services were held Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at 1:00pm at Serenity Memorial Chapel 2510 E. 72nd St, Kansas City, MO 64132 Private Disposition
