Mother Lexie Oliver passed away peacefully at home on May 25, 2026, at the beautiful age of 88.
She was born on May 31, 1937, in Tillar, Arkansas, to James Billy Lowe and Letti Mae Green. Lexie spent her childhood between Cleveland, Ohio, and Kansas City, Kansas. She graduated from East Technical High School in Cleveland, Ohio.
In 1955, she attended Cleveland Vocational Technical School, where she earned her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification. She later returned to Kansas City and attended the General Hospital Nursing Program in Kansas City, Missouri, where she earned her Registered Nurse (RN) degree.
After completing her education, Lexie began her nursing career at General Hospital in 1966. General Hospital served as an all-Black hospital until 1976, after which it became part of Truman Medical Center. Lexie continued her career there, dedicating a total of 43 years to nursing before retiring in 2009. Throughout her career, she was known for her compassion, professionalism, and commitment to caring for others.
At around nine years old, Lexie became a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church when it was located at 5th and Nebraska in Kansas City, Kansas. Her faith remained a cornerstone of her life. Over the years, she faithfully served on the Nurses Ministry, Missionary Ministry, Usher Board, Adult Choir, Kitchen Committee, and Mother’s Board.
Lexie was also a proud and devoted member of the Heart of America Sisterhood for well over 40 years, forming lasting friendships and contributing to the organization’s mission of service and fellowship.
On August 24, 1970, Lexie married George Edward Oliver. Together they shared 13 happy years of marriage, building a life rooted in love, faith, and family.
Lexie was preceded in death by her parents, Letti Mae Green and James Lowe; her husband, George Edward Oliver; sons, Kenneth Lowe and Ted Lowe; sisters, Dorere Jackson and Freddie Mae Jackson; and brother, Jesse Lowe (Jean Lowe).
Lexie loved her family more than anything and found her greatest joy in spending time with those she loved. She enjoyed shopping, traveling, watching television, and indulging in her favorite sweets. Even after her first retirement, Lexie returned to work to help support her family, demonstrating her selflessness and giving nature. She was always willing to do whatever she could to help those she loved.
Known for her generosity and hospitality, Lexie’s home was affectionately referred to as the “Oliver Hotel” by members of her church and the community because her doors were always open to family, friends, and anyone in need. Her home was a place of love, comfort, laughter, and fellowship.
In her later years, Lexie faced health challenges and mobility issues with strength and grace. Although her physical abilities declined, her mind remained sharp, and she continued to share her wisdom, wit, and love with those around her. Her resilience, faith, and unwavering devotion to her family remained evident throughout her life.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Glenda Iweha, Michelle Brown, and Letti Renee McKinney (David McKinney); son, Anthony Lowe, her brother, Michael Jackson and sister Debra Lowe-Barnes. She was a loving grandmother to Alexis Brooks, Rashonda Brown, William Brown, Lena Brown, D’Juan Oliver, LaChandra Lowe, Tiera Gates, Jayla Brown, and Jaylen Brown.
She also leaves her special nieces, Desiree Williams and Raven Williams, whom she loved as daughters, and her special nephew, Tyler Grant, whom she cherished as a grandchild. In addition, she leaves behind 23 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
