Louis L. Hicks, affectionately known as "DoHicky," passed away at the age of 81 on January 10, 2026, at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Missouri.
Born in Kansas City on January 18, 1944, he was raised by his Aunt Naomi (Hicks) Mulkey following the early passing of his mother. He eventually reunited with his father, Sylvester Owens, in 1989.
Louis attended Lincoln High School, where he met Patricia A. Greenwood. The two married on May 24, 1969, and remained inseparable for 50 years until Patricia’s death in 2019. Known as "the teenagers" for their active lifestyle, Louis was deeply devoted to his wife, personally caring for her at home during her final years.
Louis’s professional life was defined by craftsmanship and service: He served as a Journeyman and painter for the Kansas City School District, taking immense pride in maintaining the city's schools. He retired after years of service and stayed active, painting many homes, inside and out, around Kansas City.
He founded DoHicky’s Shoe Shine Parlor, operating at locations on 75th and Troost, 22nd and Prospect, and 59th and Prospect. He also served as the resident 'shoe shine man' at the Downtown Marriott Hotel, where he famously viewed shoe shining as a dignified craft, often stating, “One of the first things people will look at is your shoes.”
A long-time member of Centennial United Methodist Church, Louis served on the Senior Usher Board and was known for his willingness to share his testimony and the word of God. He was a pillar of the Vine Street and Parade Park communities, often seen supporting his children’s activities and The Marching Cobras drill team events.
Louis was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester Owens and Naomi Hicks, and his beloved wife of 50 years, Patricia A. Hicks.
He is survived by his children, Turone A. Greenwood (Chris), Kerry L. Greenwood (Priscilla), and Melanie Hicks, along with grandchildren, great grandchildren and a large extended family and many friends. He will be remembered for his extravagant shoe collection, his tireless work ethic, and his ability to never meet a stranger.
