Mary Etta Cathernie Arnold, age 87, was born on March 23, 1938, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Fred and Irma Nolen.

Mary was educated in the Kansas City Public School system. At an early age, she displayed a gentle spirit and a love for learning and creativity. She had a true gift with her hands and found great joy in sewing, becoming a skilled seamstress with Betty Rose Factory. Mary also dedicated several years of her life working for The Missouri Department of Social Services.

Mary was a deeply caring, kindhearted, and selfless woman who consistently poured love into everyone around her, especially her family. She was known for her nurturing nature, warm smile, and willingness to help others without hesitation. Her home and heart were always open, and she made everyone feel welcomed, valued, and loved.

A lifelong learner, Mary enjoyed expanding her talents and interests. She took cake decorating classes and piano lessons embracing each new skill with enthusiasm and pride. She was once a majorette and loved sharing stories of her marching days, proudly recalling how she twirled her baton with grace and confidence.

Mary also found great joy in bringing family together, especially through organizing our annual Nolen family reunion, a tradition filled with love, laughter, and togetherness that she cherished deeply. Mary was also a proud member of the Eastern Star Association.

Her faith was an important foundation in her life. At a young age she was a member of Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church. Later in life she became a devoted member of Second Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served for many years on the usher board, greeting others with grace and kindness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Irma Nolen; her sisters, Virgie Nelson and Nellie Byrd; and her brothers, Frederick Nolen and Gary Nolen and her stepdaughter; Regina Perkins. Mary gained her wings and departed this life on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

Mary leaves to cherish her precious memories: her husband, Robert Arnold; her daughter, Sharon Jenkins-Lovelace; her son, Mark Nolen Sr. (Latonia); her grandchildren, Shalishia Jackson, Richard English, Thomas English (CeAnuna), Shondricka Lovelace, Marchelle Nolen, Mark Nolen Jr. and Shanise Lovelace; a host of great-grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Also her stepchildren; Timothy Arnold (Jill), Renita Shelle and Rodney Perkins.

Though Mary has departed this earthly life, she now rests in God’s eternal care. Her love, kindness, and faith live on in the hearts of those she touched, and her legacy of compassion will never be forgotten.
