Melvin Joe Mitchell was born in Kansas City, MO on July 29, 1953, to Dorsey Lee Mitchell, Sr. and Eunice L. Gates. Joe was the youngest of twelve children. He graduated from Central High School in Kansas City, Missouri in 1971. He accepted Christ at an early age.
On May 28, 1975, Joe was united in marriage to Regina Gunnels and from this union two daughters were born, Brandi and Stephlynn.
He worked for Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, NE, where he retired as the Manager of the Mailroom. He worked at the railroad for almost 20 years. After he retired, he worked with Omaha Public School District in Nebraska and Sam’s Club in Missouri.
In 2000, Joe met his current wife, Beatrice. They were wed June 1, 2002. Together, they liked to travel, go out to eat and spend time with family.
Joe LOVED barbequing, shopping, but most of all his family. He could not go anywhere without seeing someone that he knew and if you were with him expect to spend another 30 minutes waiting for him to finish the conversation.
Joe passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2026. He was preceded in death by his father and mother - Dorsey and Eunice Mitchell; brothers: William Mitchell and Dorsey Mitchell Jr.; sisters - Minnie Wilkerson, Bernice Trimble, Gladys Quinn, and Elorise Hawkins.
To Cherish a lifetime of memories, Joe leaves his wife - Beatrice Mitchell; children – Brandi Hill (Bryon) and Stephlynn Mitchell of Omaha, NE; siblings - Eddie Mae Booker, James Mitchell (JD), J.T. Mitchell, Charles Mitchell (Charlene) of Kansas City, MO, and Vernell Mitchell of Denver, CO; stepson - Marlon Byers of Grandview, MO.; grandchildren - Antwine Harper, LaVelle Giles, Jonte Leeper, Donte Leeper, Braelynn Hill, Britton Hill, and Gabrielle Byers; two great-granddaughters - Chanel Washington and Acelynn Wester; and many, many relatives and friends.
