Michael Dwayne Sampson, Sr., passed away after a short illness on December 19, 2021, in the early morning hours at home surrounded by his immediate family.
Michael, also known as, Big Mike or Puppy Dawg, was born January 18, 1961, to the union of W.H. and Irene Sampson at KU Hospital. He was the 6th and last child born to this union. His parents preceded him in death.
Michael accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Zion Grove until his passing.
Mike got all his primary education in the Kansas City Missouri school district gathering lifelong friends along the way. From Sanford B. Ladd all the way to Central High School, where he graduated in the class of 1979. After high school he enlisted in the United States Army.
In 1982, Mike married Angie Littlejohn (Sampson). The couple raised three children together, Danny (aka Sammy), Mikah (aka Jasmin), and Michael, Jr. Because of Mike’s military career the family moved every few years. He was stationed in Korea, Heidelberg, Germany, San Francisco, California, and Killeen, TX. After serving 10 years in the Army, Mike was Honorably Discharged in 1993 and moved back to his hometown of Kansas City, Missouri.
He just recently joined in holy matrimony to Dena Sampson (Dillard) on August 21, 2021. The wedding was officiated by his big brother, Willie Sampson.
He was skilled in so many areas of life, but one of his greatest passions was driving. He could drive anything. Construction equipment, school buses or an 18-wheeler, you name it, he could drive it! He taught so many people how to stay safe on the road and make a living doing so. We can’t tell you how many times he’s driven from coast to coast.
Michael was a dedicated family man and a great best friend. He was so dependable and ready to help whenever. If you ever been to a cookout that he hosted, you couldn’t deny the great energy he gave off. The music was loud, dominoes were out, and meat was getting burned on the grill. He taught everyone close to him so many great skills in life. He’d answer your call at 2 am because he could talk for hours, come kill a spider for you at noon, and talk smack about your favorite sports team all in one day. He was a part of so many of our daily routines!
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Dena; his children, Danny Littlejohn (Chavonya), Mikah Sisson (Darcel) and Michael, Jr., all of Kansas City, MO; all his siblings, Willie Sampson (Deliece) of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Deborah Edison, Gwendolyn Sampson, Cynthia Scott (Clifford), and Theresa Harris, all of Kansas City, MO; 22 grandchildren with the newest being Hakim December; 1 great-grand; 6 nieces; and 5 nephews; and a host of family and friends.
