Listen to Obituary

Myrtle Grace Ivey-Davis (91) passed away on April 28, 2025, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by loved ones. She was born on September 18, 1933, in Gary, Indiana, to her parents, Louis Ivey and Josephine Hadin.

Myrtle eventually made her home in the Kansas City area, where she faithfully attended Emmanuel Baptist Church and Christian Tabernacle Church of God in Christ. She was a dedicated member of Evangelistic Center Cathedral of Hope International Ministries, serving dutifully on the mother board and embodying wisdom and unwavering faith in her service to the congregation.

Her many accomplishments began with her legacy as a skilled beautician. Myrtle’s passion for hairstyling opened doors for her at a salon on 18th and Vine, where she styled both local clients and traveling artists. She also brought beauty and confidence to the neighborhood women she styled at home, sharing her talent as a gift with her daughters. Her hands didn’t just shape hair—they nurtured self-esteem and strengthened connections between countless women.

With a heart set on service, Myrtle dedicated 20 years of her life to Saint Luke’s Hospital as a beloved cook. Her love for cooking quickly became a defining part of her identity—she would feed anyone, not just with her home-cooked meals but also with her signature witty sayings, offering laughter and spiritual nourishment to all who knew her.

Myrtle’s love for travel was evident in the collection of magnets that adorned her fridge, each a cherished memory from her adventures. Between journeys, she enjoyed puzzles, an activity that brought her family together, fostering patience, storytelling, and laughter.

She was also a talented seamstress, maintaining clothing with care and passing down the importance of preserving what you love. Never one to sit still, she found joy in staying active, particularly in a game of softball, where her youthful enthusiasm truly shined.

Above all, her faith defined her. Myrtle’s deep trust in the Lord was the cornerstone of her life. Her unwavering devotion to Jesus laid the foundation of faith for her children, grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Myrtle was the second of eight siblings and embraced her role as a sister with love and pride.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Josephine Hadin; father, Louis Ivey; three brothers, Eugene “Foots” Ivey, Billy Ivey, and Bobby Ivey; one sister, Zeffrey Laury; her daughter, Irma Davis; and her great-grandson, Ja’Len Jackson.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Eugene “Bo” (Toni), Thomas “Tommy,” Donna, Janette (JP), Daniel (Tonya), Kim (Jimmy), Tira (Mike Sr.), and Eric (Keiandra); along with her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Myrtle’s life was a living testimony of love, resilience, and unwavering faith. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the hearts she nurtured.
