Listen to Obituary

Richard Lawrence Higgs, 73, passed away quietly after lingering on life support for a little over two weeks, surrounded by family, on July 16, 2021 at Truman Medical Center, in Kansas City, Missouri.

He was born on September 21, 1947; in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the third son of James Monroe Higgs and Velma Ree (Vaughn) Higgs. Not long after Richard's happy arrival, the family moved to Denver, Colorado where he grew up and  attended the Denver public schools mostly on the western side of the city which is known for it's mostly Hispanic population.

Richard met Susan Crespin, and together they produced Velma, named after her paternal grandmother, Richard's only child.  Being young and in-love, the couple made a valiant effort

at raising their beautiful daughter but eventually separated as so many youngsters often do.  Although separated and in two different states, Richard managed to keep Velma in his life.

Along life's journey, Richard made many devoted friends especially members of the AA community.  He credits this organization for saving him from some very dark places.

Later in life, Richard associated with the Black Hebrew Israelites.  He became known by his Hebrew brothers as Zephaniyah (Zephaniah).  Richard associated with the Shabbat organization for the remainder of his earthly life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Velma, four brothers, James Jr., Thomas, Richmond, and Earnest, and two nephews, Jacob and Jason Higgs.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Velma Higgs of Denver, Colorado, his sister Emma (Emunah)  Mosley of Ashkelon, Israel, a sister-in-law Juanita Higgs, Raytown, MO, three grand children, Erica, Alfonso and Briana, all of Denver, Colorado, eight great grand children all of Denver,  seven nephews, Thomas Higgs, Jr.,  Richard (Ricky/ Rendal Mentahrayzz) Higgs, Ernest Higgs, Monard  (Benyahmen/Benjamin)Mosley, Earnest (Zarackiyah)Mosley, David (Daveed) Mosley, and Jermaine (Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah) Mosley; six nieces, Elizabeth Higgs, Kalelah of Jacksonville,Florida, Ronetta Dennis, Velminy Higgs, Arnita Elkins,  and Arveta Higgs all of Kansas City.  A long time care-giver and friend Shelia Williams, and many other great nieces and nephews, cousins, other  relatives, friends and associates.
