Ruby Marie Ellington was born August 1, 1939 in Clarksdale, Mississippi to Fred and Elzie Ellington, who preceded her in death. Ruby had three siblings, Elizabeth, Ruth and Fred. Elizabeth and Fred preceded her in death.
Ruby’s mother passed away when she was very young and her father relocated to Kansas City, Kansas to gain support from family.
Ruby graduated from Sumner High School and furthered her education at Kansas City Kansas Community College.
Ruby accepted Christ at an early at the New Bethel Baptist Church in Clarksdale, Mississippi. She joined Eighth Street Baptist Church in December 1953 where she was an active member for over 50 years until her health declined. She was a faithful servant with participation on the Kitchen Ministry, Mission Ministry, Pastor's Aide Committee, Sunday School, Trustee Board, Usher Board, and Women's Ministry. Ruby was very active in the National Baptist Convention.
In February 1975, Ruby joined the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department as the first African American female officer. Ruby was an active board member and member of the Black Police Officers Association. She served the city for over 25 years retiring in June 2002.
Retirement would not slow Ruby down so she continued to work as a volunteer missionary worker to support Hurricane Katrina revitalization efforts; Education Advocate for the Education Department of Kansas; Home Aide for Hospice House; and Bus Monitor for DS Bus Lines.
Ruby was a loving sister, aunt, and friend. She always lended a helping hand to anyone in need. She was a foster parent and respite caregiver for DCCCA for many years, filling her home with children who needed a loving environment.
Ruby leaves to cherish her memory; a loving sister, Ruth Harris,Chicago, Illinois; four nieces; Regina Holmes, Chicago, Illinois; Lisa Harris-Eatmon, Country Club Hills, Illinois; Delores Gray, Chicago, Illinois; LaShonda Ellington, who is also her goddaughter, Chicago, Illinois; and one nephew E.F. Ellington, Kansas City, Missouri; along with a host of great and great great nieces and nephews. She also leaves two wonderful caregivers; Tamara Millsap and Avis Nevils along with countless other family members and friends.
