Listen to Obituary

On January 25, 1935, Russell Eugene Avery, Sr. was born in Kansas City, MO, to the loving and nurturing family of Floyd and Essie Shockley Avery. He must have brought immense joy to their hearts, being the seventh child following six sisters.

Affectionately known as "Sonny" by his family, Russell grew up in the Westport area of Kansas City and commenced his education at Penn Elementary School located at 42nd and Pennsylvania St. The school, a two-room building, was established specifically to educate "colored" children from first through seventh grade. Russell continued his schooling journey at R.T. Coles and Lincoln High School, proudly graduating in 1953.

Russell was baptized at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, a significant cornerstone of his unique and friendly neighborhood. Located at 43rd St and Washington, the church played a central role in Russell's upbringing. He actively engaged in the church's youth activities, faithfully attending Sunday School, Baptist Training (BTU), as well as morning and evening services.

As a Boy Scout under the guidance of Mr. Sylvester Monroe, Russell learned respect and leadership while enjoying various outdoor activities. He cherished his time roaming the streets of his safe and vibrant neighborhood with his fellow adventurous companions.

In later years, Russell became a member of Morning Star Baptist Church at 27th and Wabash, where he served diligently on the Usher Board. As he passes through God's Pearly Gates, he reunites with his son Terrance, his parents Floyd and Essie Shockley Avery, his sisters Modenuia (Dena), Wilima (Lala), Mildred (Aunt Pretty), Kathryn, Minerva (Lou), Irene, and other cherished family and friends. What a joyous reunion it shall be! He leaves to cherish his memory his loving devoted companion Deborah Daniel Children Russell Jr Sheila Dana Stacie Minor one sibling Beverly Hill 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren 2 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and church family.
