Shirley Anderson

Shirley Ann Anderson was a warmhearted mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Surrounded by family, her soul peacefully departed this world on July 12, 2023.

She was born to the union of Theodore and Martha Washington on August 14, 1951. Shirley was raised in Neelyville, Missouri; Omaha, Nebraska; and Kansas City (K.C.), Missouri. She was educated in the Neelyville and Kansas City public school districts.

In 1968, she married William Terry Anderson. To their union they had 3 children, 1 son and 2 daughters.

Shirley was baptized into the Church of Christ in 1991. After she moved to Virginia, she became a member of the Portsmouth Church of Christ, faithfully attending until her health declined. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 23.

She was a loving and giving person who deeply cared for her family and close friends. Shirley greatly enjoyed family gatherings and entertaining others. She was an exceptional cook and never hesitated to whip up a meal. She adored caring for the elderly and built a successful career in doing so. Shirley was a devout and faithful servant of the Lord.

Her parents, 2 brothers (Charles and Michael), and sister (Darlene) preceded her in death.

She leaves to mourn her children, Carlos Anderson and Nicki Anderson of Smithfield, Virginia; and Shawna Sutton (Jermaine) of Chesapeake, Virginia; 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. 10 sisters, Patricia Magruder, Gail Haynes, Regina Stanford, Renee Shutt, and Janet Harris (Clifford) of K.C., Missouri; Denise White (Ernest) of Greenville, Illinois, Mary Williams of Nashville, Tennessee; Valerie Aldridge (Kadar), Gwen Coney (Wilford), Nicki Wilkerson (Rodrick) of Little Rock, Arkansas. 4 brothers, Theodore Washington and Robert Stanford of K.C., Missouri; Dewayne Stanford (Pasafika) of Lawrence,Kansas; Marvin Washington (Tracey) of Little Rock, Arkansas. A host of nieces and nephews, relatives, and 2 dear, longtime friends Priscilla Clay and Sandra Longmire.
