Thomas Washington Harris was born in Clinton, Missouri on April 30, 1930 to Christopher Washington Harris and Myrtle R. Harris. His parents, sister, Barbara Harris-Grayson and a great nephew, John Harris, Sr., all preceded him in death. Thomas received his early education in Appleton City, Missouri. His family later relocated to Kansas City, Missouri where he continued his education at R. T. Coles High School. Thomas enlisted in the United States Army in 1950 and was stationed at Camp Crowder in Joplin, Missouri. He later served in the Korean War where he became a Staff Sargent. Thomas learned his culinary skills while serving in the Army. Upon his discharge in 1953, he returned to Kansas City, where he bought his first house on 35th and Bales Avenue. Thomas then bought his first car, a 1950 Black Studebaker, which made him have a passion to tinker with cars. He also had a love for gardening and being a handy man. Thomas was very talented and could do anything with his hands; he loved to do upholstery for his home and friends. He received numerous awards for having the "Best Manicured Lawn" on the block from the 35th Bales Avenue Neighborhood Association. His true love was cooking; Thomas was able to use his skills for over (30) thirty years as a Dietary Technician of Veteran's Administration Medical Center. After retiring, he continued his love for cooking by hosting family gatherings. He also loved music especially Jazz. He was affectionately known as, "Uncle Tom," by family and friends, and was known for many family recipes. His nieces and nephews have all mastered at least one of his recipes to carry on his legacy, except one, his famous brisket! Mr. Harris loved to visit with his neighbors from his front porch wearing one of his favorite baseball caps. He never married or had children, however, he poured all his love into his sisters and their children. Uncle Tom loved his nieces and nephews as if they were his own children. He departed this life on Thursday, April 21, 2016. He leaves to cherish his memory his sister, Betty; four nephews, Mark Anthony (Diane) Harris, Ronald Steven (Joyce) Harris, Rodney O. Harris-Grayson and James M. Grayson, Jr.; three nieces, Marylyn Harris, Karen Gatson and Andrea Boyd and a host of great nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends.
