Thomas W. Hemphill

Thomas W. Hemphill was born on May 24, 1935 to Thomas and Minieva Hemphill in Oakridge, Louisiana. He was the eldest son of this union. He accepted Christ at a young age and later in life was a member at Palestine Missionary Baptist Church where he served on the Usher board.

Thomas was educated in the Kansas City, Kansas school district, graduating from high school in 1953. Immediately after high school he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and went into combat on the Korean peninsula. After his tour in Korea he finished his military service with the U.S. Navy. He then began a career with the U.S. Postal Service and retired after 42 years.

Thomas was a quiet, hardworking and ambitious man with a contagious smile. He emphasized the importance of education and was an excellent provider for his family.

Tom, as affectionately called by some, died peacefully in his sleep on February 9th. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Janie “Kay”, daughter Cheryl, brothers Monroe and Herman, and sisters Ceola and Vertis.

He leaves to cherish his memory three children; daughter Cherlyn Taylor (David), sons Keith Hemphill (Shellie) and Karl Hemphill (Kim). Five grandchildren Elise Taylor, Justin Taylor, Jason Taylor, Keenen Wilkins-Hemphill and Kia Hemphill. Three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
