Travis Critton was born on January 30th, 1948 in Taylor Lousiana. He was the fifth child born to Cleaveland and Earnie Mae Critton. He confessed Christ at an early age at Pine Grove Baptist church. He graduated in 1966 from Coleman High School in Gibsland, Louisiana. He attended Grambling State University where he was a member of the Marching Tigers Band and Kappa Kappa Psi music fraternity. The band made history performing at the first Superbowl in 1967. Travis’s love for music “specifically smooth jazz” was something he enjoyed; and if you ever had the pleasure of turning corners with him, you were sure to hear many of favorite songs.Travis had many other names and was affectionately called: Larry, Doby, Breeze, and Duke.
Travis was employed by TWA and was an active union representative for twenty five years until his retirement. Travis became the owner of Amoco Gas Station in 1996. He was also very active in the community serving on several boards.
Through a mutual friend, he met and married his soul mate, Gwendolyn Graves, who had two daughters, who he embraced as his own. Travis and Gwen had a one of a kind bond and a very unique way of expressing their love for one another.
Travis was a member of Greater Corinthian Church of the Christ Non-Denominational where he served as a deacon and was very active in many church ministries: GCCC Youth Drill Team, The Brotherhood Men's Prayer Breakfast, and the Mosiac Group. His most distinguished accomplishment was the “Koinonia”. This was an annual event that gave back to the community by providing free health screenings, school supplies, food, and clothing for many families in the area. This outreach ministry brought churches and choirs from around the metro area to worship and fellowship. Koinonia was a true expression of his love and passion for giving back to the community. He later branched out and partnered with the 27th Street Development project which provided housing for many in the community, and Seven Oaks Estates, which provided housing for senior citizens.
