Valerie Elaine Seay (Harmon) of Kansas City, Missouri was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on July 6, 1959, to James Harmon and Clarissa Harmon. She departed this life on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at the age of 64 at Research Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri following a brief and critical illness.

During her early childhood days, Valerie grew up traveling and living in different cities throughout the USA and abroad due to her father’s long-term military service in the United States Airforce. Their family finally settled in Atlanta, Georgia where Valerie attended Lakeshore High School in College Park, Georgia.

After graduation from high school, Valerie continued her education at the prestigious Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Always interested in developing her knowledge in different areas and after moving from Houston, Texas to Kansas City, Missouri, Valerie also attended Park College in Kansas City, Missouri.

Valerie was a hard-working and dedicated individual. After exploring several careers involving customer service and sales, she began employment with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City, Missouri in 1988. She worked in several roles with increasing levels of responsibility until she retired after 31 years of service as an Enrollment Specialist Supervisor. At work, Valerie was known for wearing her “heels” and the latest fashion trends in her business attire.

Valerie was such a free spirit that loved entertaining her family and friends, caring for her two beautiful grandchildren, volunteering with various organizations in the community, and of course, shopping.

Valerie was married in Atlanta, Georgia to James R. Seay on April 2, 1983, until January 1995, but they remained close friends until the end. Her memory will be cherished in the time to come by one son, Jonathan R. Seay of Shawnee, Kansas, one daughter, Clarissa J. Seay of College Park, Georgia, and two adorable grandchildren Tionne and Tariq Seay.

Valerie was preceded in death by her mother, Clarissa Harmon, and brother, Larry Harmon. She is survived by her father, James Harmon; children, Jonathan and Clarissa Seay; brothers, Jimmy and Wendell Harmon; grandchildren, Tionne and Tariq Seay; one grandson, Tahir Seay, arriving in August 2024; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Valerie was a very generous, kind, and loving individual. Her family can be proud and take comfort in knowing that she gave of herself, even upon death, as an organ donor. It was her final wish to help others to enhance their lives with this final gift of organ donation.
