Verta Evans

Our mother, Verta Mae Evans transcended to glory on the evening of October 17, 2016 surrounded by her children, nieces, nephews, family and friends. She was born in 1934 to the union of Floyd and Elsie Jones in Perla, Arkansas she was an only child. She later moved with her mother and extended family to Kansas City and become a lifelong resident. She received her formal education at RT Coles Vocational and Junior High School. Later and far too soon her mother became ill and passed away leaving the continuation of her education in life skills and spiritual guidance to her grandmother. Verta accepted Christ at an early age maintaining her devotion to the teachings of Christ throughout her lifetime. Verta married Edward Thomas early in life later divorcing and settling in to raise the children of this union. She later married Elijah Evans. Both husbands preceded her in the journey. She loved life and raised her children, grandchildren with joy and much love. Everyone was always welcome at Ms. Verta Mae's house. A house filled with excitement all the time as anyone reading this and know her kids will tell you. We the children, grandchildren, friends and family have many stories and memories and I am sure some of those memories come to mind as you read this during quiet reflection As the years passed and children grew up, married and started families of their own illness struck our mother which created the need for her to be hospitalized and later moved to an assisted living facility. Throughout her illness she remained strong and at times as stubborn as ever --- which is what made Verta Mae, Verta Mae and sustained her when memory allowed her passion to keep going and fighting for life. This trait is what endeared people to her and what kept her children able to cope with the changes in her life skills and gave us all the drive to make sure she was cared for all the time and that she knew how much we love her. We love you Mama "Ms Verta Mae" and we will see you again. Loved ones who have already cleared the path for Verta are her parents, grandparents, cousin whom she was raised with Janice Allen, grandson Raymon Fields and granddaughter Kimberly Thomas. Loved ones who mourn her passing are her brother L. E. Jones, children Vernetta Adair, Sandy Newman(Lloyd), Ella Thomas (Donald), Edward Thomas, DeAnthony Thomas(Susan), Linda Thomas, Felecia Thomas (Lynn), Shawn Pickett (Michael); Grandchildren Reginald, Robin, Myron, Dedtrick, Cashunda, CaSonya, Kendrick, William, Edward, DeAnna , Kelisha; 33 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and a host of relatives and friends.
